"Super"-Hero DAY ONE OF FILMING!!!

Welcome back bloggers! In today's blog post, we have some exciting news: DAY ONE OF FILMING FOR "SUPER"-HERO IS DONE!! I'll be going over how it went, what we learned, and what we plan to do next.

For our first day of filming, which took place yesterday afternoon, things got off to a hectic start. For starters, our group hadn't been able to begin filming for 2 hours since half of us were running late. Despite these setbacks, we adapted and began studying our storyboard while the other group members arrived. Once everyone was here, we had a short lunch and began filming. We decided that, considering our increasingly limited time, it would be best if we shot all scenes that required us to be outside first so that timing can be more relaxed for later filming. Luckily for us though, there was only one major scene that involved a lot of outdoors scenery, and that was the scene where the robbers sneak around the front of the house and break in. One of the changes that we made for this scene was: instead of having a static shot of the house with the robbers sneaking by and cutting away to the robbers at the door, we decided to do a handheld shot where our cameraman followed the robbers up to the door and filmed them breaking in. This not only allowed us to get better shots of the robbers, but also allowed us to make this scene shorter in length, since a static shot and cutting to the robbers breaking in would've taken up more time.

The next scenes we filmed were the robbers breaking into the homeowner's room and the actual robbery in action. This scene underwent quite a few changes as we were filming. Originally this was going to be our main handheld shot, as we were going to have the camera follow the robbers as they rush into the homeowner's room and knock him out. What we ended up doing was nearly ENTIRELY different. We decided that the scene would progress as follows: A static shot shows the robbers moving from the front door to the hallway in front of the bedroom, another shot showing a robber running into the homeowner and knocking the homeowner out, and finally an inclusion of a whip pan showing the knocked out homeowner and the stunned robbers deciding to just move along with the operation. Filming the homeowner getting knocked out was the hardest scene to film so far, partly since staying serious during filming and not bursting into laughter is something we seldom practiced prior. The whip pan inclusion was definitely the best idea we've had so far, as this builds upon the comedic effect that we were already establishing with the new animal mask idea since we get to see the robbers' shocked expressions upon witnessing this unexpected turn of events, as well as the homeowner knocked out.

So what can we do next? The great thing here is that we won't need to reshoot the opening scene as we had no uncontrollable noise occurring that interrupted the scene. From here on out, uncontrollable noise is no longer an issue. Our decision to use an iPhone to film so far hasn't produced any issues for us, as video and sound were captured in good quality, so we won't need to acquire any special equipment aside from a tripod, which we were able to acquire on film day. For the next filming day, which takes place on this upcoming Friday, we plan to shoot the rest of the remaining scenes left in our opening. Now that we have a little bit of experience filming on location, we will know exactly what to do on Friday afternoon and we will be able to finish filming the opening quickly and efficiently. As of now, we have no plans to change anything in the scenes for Power-Man's appearance and defeat. With our current planning, Friday afternoon is the last day that we will be filming for "Super"-Hero, although if we do need to do reshoots, we have plenty of time to make the actual shots as polished as possible. For now, the only scene that we filmed on Saturday that we plan to reshoot is the scene where the homeowner gets knocked out and the robbers rush in the bedroom, since we weren't able to get a clip where actors didn't break character mid-shot. Aside from that, our first day of filming went amazing and we plan to do even better for day 2 of filming!
