Sound in "Super"-Hero!

Welcome back bloggers! In today's post, I will be going over the initial choices regarding sound editing that we've made for our opening, "Super"-Hero!

When thinking about sound for this project, we had a lot of creative room since our plan was to create a superhero comedy. For the most part, sounds in the film were man-made, including the sound of the robbers breaking in and the robbers going through the drawers. Although they haven't been implemented yet, I have plans for a couple of non man-made sounds that will be put into the film. Specifically, I plan to put a bonk sound effect when the homeowner gets knocked on the head, since creating an authentic bonking sound without harming the actor would have been difficult. Additionally, I plan to include a sound of a superhero landing, likely Superman, to signify Power-Man's arrival. This sound will be diegetic, meaning all characters will hear it and respond to it. Pretending to hear a large boom and then acting frightened may be difficult at first, but now with some filming experience under our belts, this shouldn't be an issue. Aside from that, all other diegetic sounds that we plan to include can be picked up from our cameras as they film us actually acting.

As far as non-diegetic sound goes, or sound that only the audience will hear, we do plan to have music in this film. For most of the film, we plan to have some sort of mischievous music playing as the robbers proceed. There are a few moments where this soundtrack will pause, so far being when the other robbers discover the robber with the animal mask, the robbers running into the homeowner, and Power-Man's landing. Specifically by the time Power-Man lands, the music will shift from mischievous to hectic as the robbers drop everything and rush to the living room where they will discover Power-Man for the first time. For the duration of this scene, we will have angelic music playing as we reveal Power-Man to the audience and the robbers, but then have a sound of a record screech as we show the robbers' expressions turn from amazed to confused. From this point up until Power-Man is defeated, we plan to have no music playing at all, and include another bonk sound effect when he is knocked out. Then, as the robbers realize how much time they've spent inside the home, the hectic music will resume as they all storm out the door. As for actually editing the sound into the project, we have not begun doing so yet since there are still some key scenes we need to film, but our editor Pablo has already decided that the sound, as well as editing in general for the most part, will be done using Premiere Pro. We've got no plan to use any copyrighted music, since getting permission to do so will be a long complicated process that none of us have the patience for. All music used WILL be copyright free, and it's not like copyright free music is a necessarily bad choice considering our film!
