Welcome back, bloggers! In today's post, I will be diving into the costuming behind our movie opening, "Super"-Hero! Although we haven't started filming yet, as we will be shooting this weekend, we have more than enough ideas as to how we want our actors to look and appear on the big screen. With that in mind, this post is more about our current concepts for actor costumes, namely Power-Man's costume.
Our ideas for Power-Man's costume:
Power-Man's hairstyle:
Although concept designs for Power-Man are all over the place, the one thing we know for a FACT is that Power-Man MUST be colorful. After all, this is a superhero comedy, so going for a dark and gritty design just makes no sense for the vibe that we want to strike with this opening. The unfortunate truth is, designing an original costume takes time, resources, and experience that no one in our group particularly has. As such, we'll have to get creative with portraying Power-Man as a semi-original entity and not just a carbon copy of Superman. When I was brainstorming for the storyboard, I thought that a color scheme that would work best for Power-Man is green and red, with some dashes of yellow. With that in mind, the comic book character Robin seemed perfect for this vision, but Robin's cape and boots in the reference image don't quite match up with what Power-Man should be. If we want a goofy superhero, we should make him look fairly unserious and chaotic, in the comical sense. One idea I have that I think would solve all of these problems is if we were able to combine Superman's cape and boots and perhaps chest logo with the rest of Robin's costume. Now THAT would make Power-Man look like the goofy superhero we're envisioning him to be, but we won't know until we start filming this weekend. Still, it is an idea that could work very well and we can always document such changes later on. Finally, for Power-Man's hairstyle, we are keeping things simple and just keeping the hairstyle of our actor, Yulian. Not only does this save us time in filming, but Yulian's current hairstyle actually works quite well for what we think Power-Man should look like.
Our ideas for the robbers:
As far as our 3 robbers go, we've decided to change our concepts a bit. Originally, the robbers were gonna be in suit and tie as they robbed the house, wearing strange masks. I thought this would have added to the absurdity of the opening, but after some discussion during storyboarding we decided on just going basic and having the robbers be in all black with ski masks, just like in the image provided. The main reason we made the switch was because getting suits and ties and masks for everyone posed unnecessary difficulties that the basic robber idea didn't have. None of the robbers will be unmasked during the film, so hairstyles won't be an issue here. Another perk to going with basic costumes is that we won't be giving the robbers any unwanted spotlight. After all, they're basic anti do-gooders, not mob bosses. Giving them suits and ties would add depths of storytelling that we don't want nor need in the film. This new idea keeps them simple and most CERTAINLY up to no good! The two ideas from brainstorming that we DID keep for the filming as far as the robbers go is their props: money bags and bats. We'll use plastic bats to keep the family-friendly tone we are looking to strike, but other than that these props keep them traditional and simple.
Our costume ideas for the Homeowner:
Although Pablo is currently not set to play the Homeowner, this picture of him captures the outfit idea that we have in mind for the Homeowner perfectly. Considering that the robbery is fairly low-stakes, it makes no sense to dress up the homeowner in fancy clothing. Simple, casual clothing keeps the character uninteresting and doesn't take away attention from the main events of the opening, and more importantly, reserves all the awe factors for the entrance of Power-Man himself. As for the hairstyle of the homeowner, we will keep the hairstyle of the actor we choose for the role. This doesn't just save time, but it reinforces the idea that the homeowner is an entirely average person with absolutely ZERO special characteristics.
