Mood Board for Spider-Man (2002)

Welcome back! In this post, I created a mood board for Spider-Man (2002), which I last analyzed for camera shots and angles.

Mood boards are created in the very early stages of moviemaking in order to provide inspiration for the director as to what mood and feel they want their film to have. With that in mind, I looked for pictures that I thought captured what I felt after watching the movie, in this case Spider-Man. When I think of Spider-Man, I think of New York City, crimefighting, heroism, and a slight since tragedy because of Peter Parker's personal life. For the feel of the main location of the film, New York City, I picked a few pictures to highlight the role the city itself plays in shaping the film. The Flatiron and Chrysler building photos are meant to add a casual and mysterious feel respectively, with the Flatiron building symbolizing more of an "everyday life" side to NYC and the Chrysler building adding to the vigilante atmosphere that Spider-Man carries in his early days. The sunset photo and the wide shot of NYC both capture the majestic feeling the film gives every time you watch it.

A big part of the main message behind Spider-Man is the value of heroes, and not just those with powers. With this in mind, I included pictures of a firefighter and the NYPD. People who work in these jobs put their lives on the line nearly every day, and are portrayed as heroes in nearly every piece of Spider-Man media, hence their inclusion in this mood board. To go in line with the actual story of the film, I included pictures of locations such as the mansion and military facility that may have inspired the directors as to what they wanted certain locations to look and feel like, such as the Oscorp facility. Finally, a big part of Peter Parker's character is loss, so a funeral picture encapsulates that perfectly to provide inspiration for how directors would take on Parker's tragic story. I feel like this mood board is as close as I can get to recreating the mood and ideas of the original film, as well as recreating the inspiration for the final product.
